An Io GIS Database as an Example of a Planetary Spatial Data Infrastructure

Abstract:
I have been funded by NASA’s PDART program to produce an Io Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Database, that contains usable data on Jupiter’s volcanic moon Io obtained by various NASA planetary missions and Earth-based adaptive optics (AO) telescopic observations. The database is built around my global geologic map of Io (Williams et al., 2011) and the combined Galileo-Voyager mosaics that were produced for that project. We are supplementing the database with available published datasets, including: the digital elevation model (DEM) of Io produced by Oliver White and Paul Schenk using stereo photoclinometry, regional-scale Galileo Solid State Imager (SSI) mosaics (reprocessed by Moses Milazzo, OtherOrb, LLC) and derived geologic maps (published by myself and colleagues in peer-reviewed journals), hot spot power and temperature information derived from Ashley Davies’ Galileo Near Infrared Mapping Spectrometer (NIMS) Thermal Emission Database (NITED), and Earth-based telescopic maps using adaptive optics (AO), of Io’s hotspots produced by Imke de Pater and her colleagues. This Io Database, to be available as a downloadable ArcGIS™ project and in Arizona State University’s JMARS (Java Mission-planning and Analysis for Remote Sensing) platform, will serve as the basis of the data component of an Io Planetary Spatial Data Infrastructure. My presentation will provide an update on the component datasets and development of the database.
