Assessing Measures for CO2 Storage and Sequestration in Conventional Reservoirs in Oklahoma

Abstract:
Around 15 years ago, the State of Oklahoma (OK) established that the Arbuckle Group (AG) (Cambro-Ordovician) was a suitable reservoir to inject high pressure liquid CO2 for carbon sequestration (CS). In the intervening years, due to over-injection of waste fluids and induced earthquakes, the AG is likely no longer a suitable reservoir for CS. New reservoirs, preferably stacked, need to be identified that meet basic requirements including, among others: minimum volume of porosity, seal that will impede flow for a relatively long period of time and a burial depth that can contain a relatively high pressure. In OK, reservoirs in a favorable stratigraphic position that were originally over-pressured which do not contain sizable hydrocarbon deposits are likely candidates for further study.

Currently, we are evaluating relatively deep saline reservoirs in the Anadarko and Arkoma Basins as well as the Cherokee Platform of OK that have not been subjected to waste and saline water injection. Three areas in central and southern OK have been selected for more detailed study. Reservoir heterogeneity/mineralogy/porosity-pore systems via petrophysical evaluation are being initiated. Facies, composition, diagenesis and quantitative image analysis for pore system characterization are being undertaken utilizing available cores and well cuttings. Each of these studied areas have relatively unique geology that can be beneficial to the success of the CS schema in terms of both geology and engineering. The scope of this paper encompasses data collection and analysis to support and promote implementation of commercial-scale CS.

The Simpson Group, Cromwell Sandstone, Hunton Group and possibly, the Arbuckle in non-oil rich regions of OK seem to be the best choices. The ultimate choice will be determined by safety considerations and the economic reality of the distance from the source of the CO2 (power plants) and availability of pipelines.
