The NASA TEMPO Mission: Revolutionary Air Quality Measurements from Geostationary Orbit

Abstract:
The NASA Tropospheric Emissions: Monitoring of Pollution (TEMPO) spectrometer, scheduled for launch in mid-2022, will provide hourly daylight measurements of solar backscattered radiation at high spatial resolution across a Field of Regard (FOR) covering the North American continent. These unprecedented measurements will enable robust retrievals of major air pollutants, which will greatly enhance the monitoring of the rapidly varying emissions and chemistry that governs our air quality conditions. A TEMPO Early Adopters Program has been established to recognize the application benefits and user needs of TEMPO data by promoting active interactions between the community of researchers and broad spectrum of end users during the pre-launch phase of the mission. A key component of the Early Adopters Program is the pre-launch use and assessment of synthetic TEMPO data products, which aims to help prepare end users for real TEMPO data after launch. This talk will provide an overview of the TEMPO Mission and Early Adopters Program, and demonstrate application benefits of TEMPO data using synthetic products. Recent developments and future plans of the program to pave the way for immediate use of TEMPO data products after launch will also be discussed.
