Abstract:
Juno’s Stellar Reference Unit (SRU) star camera is a highly sensitive broadband (450-1100 nm) imager with a primary engineering purpose to support spacecraft attitude determination. Juno has exploited the engineering features of this low light camera to acquire unprecedented high resolution observations of Jupiter’s lighting during the spacecraft’s low altitude flybys of Jupiter’s dark side. The imagery has provided new insights into the spatial scale and origin of Jovian lightning flashes, with implications for the planet’s lightning generation processes and its atmospheric composition.
