The Modulation of Compound Extreme Events and Biogenic Emissions on Ozone Concentration

Abstract:
The climate extremes may substantially affect the ozone concentration, through the modulation of temperature, water vapor as well as biogenic emissions. Most of the previous studies have focused on the impact of a single extreme weather event on ozone concentration, such as heat waves and atmospheric stagnation. Recent studies revealed that the compound events may greatly aggravate the severe pollution. In this study, we first investigate how compound climate extremes influence the ozone concentration, as well as the nonlinear effect of compound events relative to a single climate extreme event. Secondly, whereas the temperature increase due to global warming may largely enhance the ozone formation, the extra water vapor, concomitant with the increase in temperature based on Clausius-Clapeyron relationship, may act as a sink of ozone. Overall, the combined effect of temperature and water vapor may balance each other, and together with the emission, modulate the complex system of ozone variation. Lastly, the effect of biogenic emissions was discussed in view of a decreasing anthropogenic emissions.
