Preliminary result of similarity studies between material-science model of dislocation patterns and results of regional active-fault mapping in the central Sulawesi, Indonesia

Abstract:
Central Sulawesi high-slip-rate active-fault system shows a complex structure involving a major sharp bend between the E-W Matano fault and the NW-SE trending Palukoro fault, which accommodate the clockwise block rotation of the central Sulawesi along the left-lateral strike-slip fault system. In the far west of the fault bend, there is an active Mamuju thrust zone aligning about N-S along the offshore of the eastern side of the Makassar Strait between Sulawesi and Kalimantan. The geometry and spatial distributions of the fault pattern from the results of regional active-fault mapping has similarities with the dislocation pattern pinned by jogs bowing from the results of the material-science models. The detailed curving geometry of the Mamuju Thrust appears to represent a radius curvature of the main force vector movement (R) that is directed to the meeting point of the Matano and Palukoro Faults. Thus, it indicates a close link between the thrust formation and the bend of the major strike-slip faults.
