Evaluation of Satellite-based Precipitation Products Using Extending Rain gauge Network in Huai River Basin, China

Abstract:
This project evaluates and compares three satellite-based precipitation products, NOAA CPC Morphing Technique (CMORPH), latest released Integrated Multi-satellitE Retrievals for GPM mission (IMERG) version 7, and Climate Hazards Center InfraRed Precipitation with Station data (CHIRPS), in different temporal and spatial resolution over Huai River Basin in China. Two versions of CMORPH (CMORPH1.0 and CMORPH0.x) and two versions of IMERG (IMERG-early and IMERG-final) are inter-compared. The impacts of precipitation intensity, rainfall pattern and basin topography on the accuracy of precipitation products are also analyzed. The reference dat set came from an extensive operational rain gauge network that consists of over 3000 rain gauges. Results show that (1) IMERG V07 outperforms other satellite products ,(2) the satellite precipitation products perform better at relatively high elevation (>300m) than at lower elevation (<50m), and (3) the satellite products characterize well the temporal precipitation distribution but indicate significant underestimation.
