Changes of rice yield in South Korea for the last 33 years

Abstract:

This study investigated the average and variation of rice yield in South Korea. Observation of rice yield (kg/10a) in South Korea was obtained from the Statistics Korea for the period 1986-2018 (33 years). Due to heterogeneous characteristics in spatial distribution, the observed rice yield was analyzed for each province in South Korea. The national average of rice yield was 481 kg /10a for the recent 33 years. The rice yield in the eastern part of South Korea had increased with a trend of 3.5 kg/10a year. Meanwhile, the increasing trend was the lowest in the western part (0.8 kg/10a) of South Korea. Comparing the recent (2004-2018) and the past (1989-2003) 15 years, the difference was the greatest in the southeastern part of South Korea (69 kg/10a), followed by the northeastern part (62 kg/10a). Such information could be useful to understand the change in rice yield by province in South Korea.
