A Community Resource for Rapid Response to Geohazards

Abstract:

The Seismological Facility for the Advancement of Geoscience (SAGE) is an NSF-funded facility operated by the Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS). As a part of the SAGE award, IRIS will implement an expanded capability to facilitate the rapid response to geohazards with geophysical instrumentation. Beginning in 2019, IRIS convened a number of in-person and virtual gatherings to solicit community input on science objectives, observational requirements and operational characteristics for this new capability. Working with community members, IRIS hosted thematic sessions to discuss several different geohazard scenarios, including: large earthquakes, volcanoes, induced seismicity, hydrosphere/cryosphere, geomagnetic, and marine seismic hazards. Recordings and presentations from these gatherings have been posted to IRIS’ Rapid Response to Geohazards webpage (www.iris.edu/rapid). Using this input, IRIS intends to purchase and support a new set of instrumentation dedicated to rapidly responding to geohazards. PIs will be able to schedule and use this equipment from the PASSCAL Instrument Center, and we will be working with the community on usage policies to assure the availability of these instruments for geohazard-related observations. We will present details of this new capability and implementation plans.
