Ultraviolet Reflectance Phase Curves of Saturn's Rings

Abstract:
We have actively done research on the scattering properties of Saturn’s rings, however, there has never been research conducted that calculates the Far Ultraviolet (FUV) phase curve and whether there is a spectral dependence. Discovering whether there is in fact a spectral dependence on the phase curve of Saturn’s rings is the basis of our queries. Using high resolution Solar Spectral Irradiance (SSI) data from SORCE SOLSTICE gives us the opportunity to calculate wavelength dependence in a more detailed manner than done previously, which can eventually give researchers a deeper insight on the surface properties of Saturn's rings. Using Cassini UVIS, we observe the scattering properties of Saturn’s rings in the FUV. To calculate the reflectance of the rings, we divide the Cassini UVIS data by the solar spectrum from SORCE SOLSTICE. Specifically focusing on Saturn’s B rings in this research, we found that there is in fact a spectral dependence on the phase curve of Saturn’s rings. Research on Saturn’s A and C rings still need to be completed, along with studying the surface properties of each ring.
