Subject: Community-wide mortality rates in Guangzhou, China, during the 2013-2018 typhoons compared to unexposed periods

Objective: Typhoon with high frequency have caused great loss of life and property to human society. there are about 90 typhoons in the world every year,and more than 80 to 100 million people die from typhoons every year, which bring about a great threat to people's health. China's coastal areas are one of the regions with the most typhoons landing in the world. In recent years, the frequency has increased, the disaster area is wider and the damage is more serious. The health risk of Chinese residents caused by typhoons has become an important challenge. The strong wind, rainstorm and storm surge brought by typhoons can not only directly cause casualties and increase the accidental death and disability rate, but also lead to a significant increase in the mortality and morbidity rate of various diseases.
Methods: our study chose 10 typhoons (different levels) landing in or around Guangzhou from 2013 to 2018, and compared community-wide mortality rates on the peak typhoon day and the three following days to matched non-typhoon days in another years (2013–2018), controlling for potential confounders, to estimate the relative risks (RRs) of daily mortality among Guangzhou residents associated with these typhoons.
Results: In this study, we found that typhoon has an ability to influence Guangzhou residents’ health. From 2013-2018, the strong typhoon-associated relative risk (RRs) were 1.12 (95% confidence interval, 1.02,-1.22) for total non-accidental mortality, 1.29 (1.06, 1.58) for respiratory in typhoon day, 1.08 (1, 1.16) for total non-accidental mortality after one day of typhoon landing, and 1.08 (1.00, 1.19) for circulatory after two days of typhoon landing, compared to unexposed periods.
Conclusion: This study offers critical evidence on typhoon-related health impacts, as typhoon is expected to become more frequent and severe in China.
