Description:

Over the course of the past few years, I have been photographing and analyzing sand samples from around the world. This passion grew out of my interest in snowflake photography, which was limited to a short period of exploration. I quickly realized that not all sand samples are the same, and that there are many geologic environments in which they form.

While this research has allowed me to understand sand from a general perspective, it has also provided an opportunity to learn about the geological origins of sand. As a result of this study, I have learned that the processes of erosion have greatly contributed to the formation of sand grains. I have also discovered that quartz sand tends to be a “mainstay” item within varying sand samples. I appreciate that this project has allowed an exploration of the reasoning behind the locations of particular grains of sand.

In addition to learning about the specific geological processes that sand has undergone, this project has also taught me to appreciate the beauty of nature. Looking at sand under a micro lens allows one to understand what is happening “beneath their feet”. I truly developed a passion for this unique type of photography, and this project continues to evolve with my interests.

Communication and Networking:

Communication played a crucial role in ensuring a successful research project. I have been able to acquire sand from across the world, without visiting these locations, as a result of networking. Along with asking friends and family for samples, I emailed educators around the world and asked for their assistance. Everyone who provided a sand sample was given a personalized portfolio of the sand grains from their region. Throughout this project, I have acquired green and black sand from Hawaii, coral sand from the Dominican Republic, quartz from the shores of New Jersey, and unique samples at over 20 alternative locations.

Presentation:

The final product of my previous studies has been a picture book, which I intend to incorporate into this presentation. Furthermore, I would create a photo montage of the sand grains. In addition to looking at the images, individuals will also have the opportunity to listen to a “voice over” description of what is being shown. I hope to add an interactive element to this presentation, where viewers can ask questions.
