Evaluating SensorWeb Approaches in Data Collection to Improve Water-resource Monitoring, Modeling and Forecasting

Abstract:
Evaluating on performance, interoperability, and fidelity at the fundamental level of ecosystem monitoring provides functionality that promotes clear internal and external communication, cooperative solutions, and improved mission readiness. The USGS Next Generation Water Observing Systems (NGWOS) program is implementing a research and development framework, which promotes clear communication of technical and product needs, assessing readiness levels of emerging environmental sensing and monitoring capabilities, and promoting the swift dissemination of evaluation results.

NGWOS-supported evaluations of practical applications of emerging sensors and rapidly developing SensorWebs within the environmental monitoring theater at innovation and technical readiness level evaluation sites are underway. How existing and future sensors and SensorWebs can promote interoperability and indexing of observations from fit-for-purpose water resource monitoring will be discussed in a flood monitoring, modeling and forecasting use case.
