Abstract:
During a flood, early warning is the key to reducing damage and ensuring safety of people. However, conventional stream gauges which are used to monitor rivers and predict upcoming flood conditions which is costly and labor intensive to maintain.

Real Time Solutions has come up with solution for Flood Forecasting Using telemetry system where, the data are collected and transmitted through wireless medium over the internet to a database server and it can be analyzed and used in models for the purpose of flood forecasting. Efficiency of data transmission and acquisition directly influences the accuracy and effectiveness of the forecasts. Real time data becomes critical particularly in case of flash flood forecasting for providing adequate lead time, which are common in the hilly areas of Nepal. Recently, the Flood Forecasting Section of the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has installed telemetry system for collecting the hydrological data from different parts of area for forecasting flood. This paper presents an overview of the application of such technology in Karnali, Narayani and Koshi Basin, Nepal.
