Abstract:
The AEROKATS and ROVER Education Network (AREN) uses low cost NASA technologies, operational concepts and NASA science and engineering concepts in learner centered experiences to spark students interest in STEAM. Our primary tools include instrumented kites (Advanced Earth Research Observation Kites and Atmospheric/Terrestrial Sensors/AEROKATS) and surface vehicles (Remotely Operated vehicles for Education and Research/ROVERs), with team-based missions a critical component. A key focus is contributing to the NASA GLOBE program, particularly with new observation tools tailored for K-Undergraduate and citizen-science audiences.
Our STEAM centric learning introduces Remote Sensing and geospatial technologies, and includes a focus on Engineering skill development through instrumentation discovery and design. Additional science related topics include data capture, analysis, visualization and presentation of results. Creative Arts, integrated into design and visualizations, are also an important element, particularly for attracting a wide and diverse learning audience. Successes have included small and large audiences in both formal and informal settings, with a special emphasis on traditionally underserved learners and communities.
