Abstract:
Two decades ago, cosmologists discovered that the expansion of the universe is accelerating. The cause of this apparent accelerating expansion has been attributed to dark energy or possible modifications to our understanding of gravity as described by General Relativity (i.e. Modified Gravity). Most current attempts to understand dark energy or modified gravity are centered around indirect observations via cosmological observables. However, quantum sensing may offer unique opportunities to make direct measurements of the effects of dark energy on particles. This would provide a complementary and compelling alternative to cosmological measurements.
