Surface Energy Budgets in MISOBOB and PISTON

Abstract:
In the paper we report on analysis of observations of surface fluxes and simple cloud variables obtained in the MISOBOB and PISTON field programs. The observations are from R/V Thompson (2018) and R/V Sally Ride (2019). The PSL seagoing turbulence and radiative flux system and cloud remote sensors were deployed for a total of 100 days. We will present a comparison of direct turbulent flux observations with bulk (COARE algorithm) estimates. The main part of the analysis will concern the balance of solar radiative flux vs sensible heat, latent heat, and net IR fluxes as a function of the strength of the meteorological forcing (suppressed, disturbed, and MJO/Monsoon conditions). Mean PISTON and MISOBOB results with be compared to previous tropical field programs (COARE, EPIC, JASMINE, and DYNAMO).
