Partnering with the Nations 17,000 Public Libraries in Support of Eclipse 2024

Abstract:

During the 2017 American Total Solar Eclipse, more than 7,000 public libraries across the country worked with the STAR Library Education Network to prepare their patrons, and communities, for the impact (scientific, inspirational and logistical) of the event. With support from NASA, Google, and the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, STAR Net was able to provide 2.1 million eclipse glasses to libraries and their patrons in every state. Public libraries became centers of eclipse knowledge in their communities, providing safety tips, viewing materials, and hands-on programming to explain the science of solar eclipses. Many libraries began promoting the event up to a year in advance, culminating in an eclipse day celebration.

This talk will focus on providing suggestions and answering questions around partnering with local public libraries in support of the 2024 eclipse. Libraries are eager for knowledge and resources, but are themselves a great resource for those wishing to reach the public with solar science! Libraries can host public talks and programs, they can promote opportunities, and their role as a trusted community resource ensures that they will be heard! Approximately 70% of the public visits their public library at least once a year. Take advantage of this free community resource in your eclipse planning!
