Lessons Learned in Knowledge Coproduction: The People Make the Project

Abstract:

Knowledge coproduction, a process that involves both creators and users of information in its generation, is growing in popularity in the conservation and ecology fields. While examples of successful coproduction are becoming more common, many barriers and challenges remain in this work. Here, we reflect on our experiences in knowledge coproduction from three recent case studies, using an existing framework to assess our efforts at each phase of the process. Our reflections yield insights that may help other scientists seeking to support decision-making. We found that planning engagement, including connecting with agency representatives early and often, and paying particular attention to the composition of the team, is an important key to success. Additionally, incorporating a plan for the sustained dissemination of results at the start of an effort ensures greater longevity and adoption of the outputs and outcomes. Finally, long-term commitment to the project and long-term funding are key. We conclude with suggestions for refining the framework we used, to incorporate our key lessons learned.
