Increasing STEM Participation in Zambia through Space Science

Abstract:
We report on the activities carried out in Zambia as part of the AGU 100 Celebrations under the theme “Increasing STEM Participation in Zambia, Africa: Earth and Space Science Outreach”. With AGU 100 Grant funding in 2019, STEM education and outreach activities were performed at three different universities in Zambia and three Stanford SOLAR Centre Sudden Ionospheric Disturbance (SID) monitors were delivered and installed. SID monitors are inexpensive space weather instruments that can detect changes to the Earth’s ionosphere driven by solar flares and other ionospheric disturbances. In this paper, we discuss an overview of the project, the outreach work done in Zambia, and finally present the first set of observations from the instruments and how this will benefit local students and scientists.
