Abstract:
The Magnetics Information Consortium (MagIC) (earthref.org/MagIC) is dedicated to improving research in the Earth, Ocean and Space sciences by maintaining an open community digital data archive for rock and paleomagnetic data with portals that allow scientists and others to access, archive, search, visualize, download, and combine versioned datasets. MagIC has recently extended its file format to more efficiently store large data sets. Data entries that are the same for all rows can now be put in the header of a table (earthref.org/MagIC/help/text-file-format) instead of being repeated on each row. Measurement data can be broken into experiments that have different headers to further reduce the file size. This work has facilitated the efficient archiving of x-ray photoelectron emission microscopy (XPEEM) and SQUID microscopy data. We are also planning to accommodate quantum diamond microscopy (QDM) data in the future. MagIC has been working with MIT to create efficient upload workflows for these large datasets (doi.org/10.7288/V4/MAGIC/16837 for example) and are looking forward to working with others that have these relatively new types of instrument data to upload into MagIC.

We are also collaborating with the European Plate Observing System (EPOS)'s Thematic Core Service Multi-scale laboratories (TCS MSL). MagIC is sending its contributions' metadata to TCS MSL via DataCite records for representation in the EPOS system. This collaboration should allow European scientists to use MagIC as an official repository for European rock and paleomagnetic data and help prevent the fragmenting of the global paleomagnetic and rock data into many separate data repositories. GFZ Data Services also uses MagIC's DataCite records to link to MagIC for data sets that are in both their repository and MagIC. Further interoperability improvements continue to be made with MagIC participation in ESIP's schema.org cluster with a focus on better describing geologic time and collaboration with EarthCube's GeoCODES on using schema.org/JSON-LD headers on MagIC contribution pages as machine readable descriptions of data held in MagIC.
