Abstract:
On January 6-7th 2014 a series of coronal mass ejections (CMEs) launched off the Sun. One of the CMEs produced a large Martian directed shock where Earth felt a glancing blow on the 9th of January 2014. The effect was the compression of the dayside magnetosphere by approximately 1 Earth Radii. This compression led directly to the day-side loss of particles who were initially within 0.5 deg. of the loss cone by adiabatic processes. The resultant change in the local temperature anisotropy caused the growth of chorus, hiss, and EMIC waves. The entire event only lasted ~10 minutes. This was enough time to infer the loss of 10s – 100s keV particles to the upper atmosphere from the BARREL payloads. In this talk we will look at how the compression led to an increase anisotropy which generated cyclotron waves, and how those waves interacted with the local populations. Specifically, we will take a closer look at the minimum resonant energy for the locally grown chorus wave and the inferred loss of 10s eV – 100s eV electrons.
