Increasing Participation in Computational Research Careers for Women and Underrepresented Students Through an Intensive Research-Focused Workshop Model

Abstract:
Computational research is an emerging and increasingly important discipline in the Geosciences; cutting edge computation and data science are necessary for studying complex Earth and planetary systems. Unfortunately, there is a well-known and persistent gender gap in computer science, which has carry-over consequences for women’s participation in the Geosciences. We designed a research-focused workshop to build community and open pathways into computational research for women students from 2- and 4-year colleges and universities in California’s San Joaquin Valley. Thirty-one undergraduates from 4 institutions were recruited to a 3-day workshop. They were trained in problem-solving and practical skills including coding for remote sensing with Google Earth Engine and flying small-payload drones, as well as essential skills like elevator pitches, networking and dining etiquette. Students were also exposed to professional women and graduate students in computational research who shared their career pathways and how they overcame adversity. Mixed-methods evaluation assessed self-efficacy, attitudes about computer science, interest in graduate school, research skills, professional identity and sense-of-belonging. Respondents were 85% female, 86% female of color, and distributed across a subjective socioeconomic status ladder. Quantitative results indicated that student attitudes about and skills in computer science research were enhanced post workshop; confidence in research skills increased by 32%. Qualitative results highlighted the value students found in gaining confidence and improving essential skills like networking but expressed a desire for greater consideration of issues affecting students of color. Planned follow-up in-person activities were cancelled due to COVID-19 school closures and online engagement through LinkedIn and other social media has not sustained a community. Future work should identify interventions targeted at intersectionality and practices for building a sustained community across online and hybrid formats.
