J-DESC strategy for forthcoming drilling projects on the new Scientific Framework 2050

Abstract:
J-DESC (Japan Drilling Earth Science Consortium) hosted a Workshop “Scientific Ocean Drilling beyond 2023” in April 2019. The aim of this workshop was to discuss the items that should be included in the new science plan for the next phase of scientific ocean drilling. The initial science plan (ISP) of the current International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) (Illuminating Earth’s Past, Present, and Future) highlighted 14 key questions as “Challenges”. During the workshop, we reviewed the achievements of those Challenges, and discussed which Challenges should be kept/modified/supplemented/expanded, and what should be added in the next science framework. Bottom-up discussions are of paramount importance as a first step toward developing a new science plan. The J-DESC Workshop was the first of a series of workshops held in Austria (ECORD), Australia (ANZIC), and the US. The steering committee of the J-DESC Workshop was composed of 20 members, and the number of total participants was 150, including approximately 40 graduate students and postdocs.

Following the J-DESC Workshop, J-DESC has identified three themes and six flagship goals for the 2050 Science Framework. Three themes are; “Resilient and Dynamic Earth”, “Terrestrial to Extraterrestrial”, and “To the Future Technologies with Innovative Science”. Moreover, J-DESC emphasizes the importance of the deep mantle drilling and the seismogenic zone drilling through collaboration with international communities. The mantle drilling attempts to constrain the architecture of oceanic crust and mantle in diverse tectonic settings and spreading rates, in order to characterize processes and extent of hydration in the oceanic plate and links to biogeochemical processes, to perform monitoring of active lithosphere processes and conditions, and to install in-situ laboratories. The seismogenic zone drilling continues to understand the fluid, heat, strain, and stress states variation through earthquake cycles, the global perspective of mega and slow earthquakes, and the link between maga and slow earthquakes. J-DESC also collaborates with the international communities for profiling dynamic biosphere, uncovering climate mystery, constraining subseafloor processes in real-time and holistic understanding of the Earth system through data science by scientific drilling.
