Preliminary results from GRACE/GRACE-FO 5-day mascon solutions from CSR

Abstract:
The Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) and its Follow-On (GRACE-FO) missions have been providing global total water storage monitoring data since 2002. These missions have provided critical measurements to improve understanding of changes in the Earth system. Data from these missions have provided valuable insights in the fields of geodesy, hydrology, oceanography, cryospheric science and solid earth etc. The traditional solutions provided by the GRACE/GRACE-FO missions is a gravity field product that is averaged over one calendar month. There are a few experimental products that aim to improve the temporal resolution of the GRACE/GRACE-FO timeseries.

This study focuses on the 5-day global mascon solutions produced from the GRACE/GRACE-FO at the Center of Space Research (CSR). We will discuss the techniques used and challenges encountered when producing such a total water storage product with higher temporal sampling frequency. Preliminary results from the resulting output will be discussed. Analysis will be performed over several hydrological basins to validate the higher frequency signals obtained from these GRACE/GRACE-FO solutions using other in-situ data and model comparison. This analysis will be the first step towards producing high temporal resolution GRACE/GRACE-FO signals for ingestion into automated machine learning algorithms to perform GRACE-like data reconstruction.
