Abstract:
The climate general circulation models suffer with errors in vertical distributions of temperature and salinity which has consequences on the large scale inter-annual variability. One of the reasons of these errors could be the parameterization of mixing in the upper ocean and studies show that mixing is overestimated in the general circulation models. DNS results have shown that there are reversible and irreversible components of mixing in stably stratified flows, and only the irreversible component accounts for mixing (Venayagamoorthy & Koseff, 2016; Venayagamoorthy & Stretch, 2010). It is hypothesized that the deeper mixed layers in general circulation models are a result of reversible component of mixing. Here, using the 3-D Ocean Dynamic Thermodynamic Model (ODTM;(Valsala et al., 2018)) which uses a level 2 turbulence closure mixing model (Mellor & Yamada, 1982), we investigate the reversible and irreversible fluxes in a stratified ocean basin of Bay of Bengal. We also test the sensitivity of the ODTM to include only irreversible fluxes.
