VOC Emissions and Photochemical Pollution in An Open Oil Field in Northern China

Abstract:
A lot of recent research has uncovered the impact of oil and natural gas (O&NG) production on ozone chemistry in the U.S. but information for other countries is lacking. To investigate the influence of O&NG production on air quality in China, we conducted 2 intensive field campaigns during February-April and June-July 2017 in the Yellow River Delta. There are 2 intensive oil production areas near the site. One is mainly distributed in the coastal area (about 10 km to the northeast), while the other is in the urban area (about 30 km to the southwest). A large suite of chemical and meteorological parameters was measured in-situ and used as a constraint for a photochemical box model to quantify the air quality effects. Furthermore, we collected source samples near oil extraction machines to characterize the source profiles of VOCs in Chinese oil fields. Very high VOC levels were captured at the site with a clear fingerprint of emissions from O&NG production, including leakage from storage and transportation processes. Several photochemical episodes were observed with the continuous impact of VOCs from O&NG extraction emissions. We also conducted a 1-day simultaneous measurement in the oilfield and site to directly verify such influence.

In this presentation, we will introduce the major findings from this study in the perspective of pollutant concentrations, emission profile, formation regimes of ozone and carbonyl, radical chemistry and implication of O&NG production to regional air quality.
