Evaluation of ENSO Teleconnections over the Maritime Continent in CMIP6 Models

Abstract:
The Maritime Continent (MC) is located in the heart of the Indo-Pacific Ocean. The MC is home to a large fraction of the world's population and changes to seasonality of rainfall and temperature could have great socio-economic impacts. However, there is large uncertainty in future projections of climate change over this region, primarily due to large natural variability arising from the tug of war between major climate drivers in the Indian and Pacific Ocean. It has been challenging for climate models to satisfactorily simulate the climate over the MC, given its unique geography, but also because of ongoing challenges in the simulation of these climate drivers as well their interplay. Here we will present results from a recent study evaluating the ENSO teleconnections over the MC as simulated by CMIP6 models.
