Statistical analysis of MSTID diurnal behavior and solar activity dependence using the SuperDARN Hokkaido pair of radars

Abstract:
We presented the latest results of the statistical analysis of medium-scale traveling ionospheric disturbances (MSTIDs) using the SuperDARN Hokkaido pair of (HOP) radars data. We applied the three-dimensional fast Fourier transform algorithm developed by Matsuda et al. (2014) to the long-term dataset, Hokkaido East (HOK) data from 2009 to 2019 and Hokkaido West (HKW) data from 2016 to 2019, and studied diurnal and seasonal variations of propagation directions of MSTIDs and solar activity dependence of the MSTID power spectrum density (PSD). We found that the nighttime MSTIDs propagate southwestward and the daytime MSTIDs propagate mainly southward. We revealed a negative correlation between the MSTID PSD and solar activity. Possible generation / propagation / dissipation mechanism of the MSTIDs will be discussed.
