Double dispersions observed near the separatrix

Abstract:
The separatrix has been considered as a key region for particle acceleration in magnetic reconnection. However it has not been studied in detail, because of the insufficient resolution of plasma data. Using MMS burst mode data, we report separatrix crossing cases where dispersions with similar energy range but different time scale have been found in electrons and ions. Due to the E×B drift and velocity filter effect in which high energy particles with high parallel speed can be seen prior to low energy particles along the field line. Both of these dispersions are caused by the E×B drift and velocity filter effect, and the different time scale reflects that duration for E×B drift are different. This indicates that particles are not frozen-in in a distance along the field line close to the separatrix.
