Abstract:
ESA’s ninth Earth Explorer mission, the Far-infrared Outgoing Radiation Understanding and Monitoring (FORUM) is expected to be launched in 2026.

In preparation to FORUM, a new instrument demonstrator named Far-Infrared Radiation Mobile Observation System (FIRMOS), was developed for field applications from ground-based (and in perspective airborne) platforms to verify with real measurements the sounding capabilities provided by FIR observations.

FIRMOS is a Fourier Transform Spectrometer currently covering the 100-1000 cm−1 spectral range and has been in operation at the Zugspitze Observatory (Germany), at about 3000 m above sea level, in a two phases campaign (29 November - 18 December 2018 and 21 January - 20 February 2019), when it acquired observations of the downwelling far-infrared atmospheric emission together with the E-AERI instrument, which is permanently installed at the observatory and measures between 400 and 3000 cm−1.

In this work we present the instrument design, the spectral measurements acquired during the campaign and their validation against E-AERI.
