The Energetic-Particle-Detector (EPD) SupraThermal Electron Proton (STEP) instrument on Solar Orbiter: First Data and Background Corrections
Abstract:
EPD‘s SupraThermal Electron and Proton (STEP) sensor measures electrons and ions (predominantly protons) with energies between a few keV and ~80 keV. It has two sensors heads, one measures ions only by sweeping away electrons with a strong permanent-magnet system, the other measures ions and electrons. Each of the two sensor heads has a 15-pixel solid-state detector inbehind a small pin hole and can so measure detailed pitch-angle distributions.
We will provide a detailed description of the STEP sensor, including its pixel detector, energy resolution, calibration and commissioning activities as well as its data from the commissioning and current cruise phase. We will discuss some early measurement results and expectations for future measurements.
