Increasing the Use of Global Precipitation Measurement Data and Products for Applications

Abstract:
Precipitation data from NASA’s Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) mission have supported a wealth of applications to serve societal needs at local to global scales. Such applications include water resource management, agriculture, vector- and water-borne disease monitoring, animal migration, tropical cyclone location and intensity estimation, hydropower management, flood and landslide monitoring and forecasting, and land system modeling, among others. The applicability of these data products across these range of applications have helped the GPM mission establish a large community of users from federal, state, private and non-profit institutions. Current GPM applications efforts continue to focus on increasing the use of GPM data and products across communities through user engagement and outreach activities. Efforts to engage users include workshops, trainings, interviews, as well as the development of core visualization tools, all with the goal to identify data requirements, needs and challenges using satellite precipitation data for decision-making. Understanding the needs and challenges faced by applied end users enables the GPM team to improve data products and usability for applications. This also helps NASA and partner organizations to understand and quantify who these users are and their future needs for satellite data. In this presentation we provide an overview of 2019-2020 GPM applications activities, highlighting efforts made to engage the user community and understand community needs. We also present efforts made to support applications activities for future observing systems related to the Aerosols, and Clouds, Convection and Precipitation (ACCP) Study.
