A New Aspect of Aerosol Indirect Effects

Abstract:
A central link between aerosol and aerosol indirect effects is the concentration of cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) as a function of supersaturation (S), CCN spectrum. The CCN spectrum is often assumed to follow a power-law relationship NCCN = cSk, where c and k are two empirical parameters that are assumed to be independent in studies of aerosol indirect effects. Here we first show, by analyzing long-term CCN measurements, that c and k are actually related to each other. We then show theoretically that the c-k relationship will introduce additional contributions to both droplet number concentration (number effect) and relative dispersion (dispersion effect) of cloud droplet size distributions, leading to some new/unique phenomenon of aerosol indirect effects that has been largely ignored. Direct connection to the aerosol population properties such as size distribution and chemical composition is explored as well.
