Abstract:
NASA Goddard Earth Sciences Data and Information Services Center (GES DISC) has developed the Level 3 and 4 Regridder and Subsetter (L34RS), which allows users to subset, remap, and convert Earth Observation (EO) datasets, satellite and model, including Modern-Era Retrospective analysis for Research and Applications (MERRA and MERRA-2), Land Data Assimilation System (LDAS, e.g., FLDAS, GLDAS, NLDAS, and NCALDAS), Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM, e.g., IMERG), and Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI).

The NASA GES DISC has implemented many features and functionalities to address the increasing demands from the scientific community for analysis ready data (ARD):

  • Subset data based on spatial extent, temporal resolution, variable, and vertical levels to allow users to retrieve only the desired results.
  • Remap the data into different grid types for direct comparison with the detailed information for 36 popular data grids used in the earth science community.
  • Produce case studies, for example, the 2018 Kilauea volcano eruption by subsetting and remapping MERRA-2 and OMI data.
  • Convert output into cloud friendly formats, such as, Cloud Optimized GeoTIFF (COG), from the LDAS datasets for the hydrology community.
  • Calculate statistics such as mean, minimum, and maximum for daily datasets.

We also developed the metrics learning approach to better understand and meet user’s needs, and detect & predict service anomalies. We are continuously improving our service for ARD at the NASA GES DISC by adding new functionalities and new missions. Future development plans include: shapefile subsetting, supporting netCDF with group structure for compliance with the Climate and Forecast (CF2 group), and optimizing the tool for cloud implementation.
