Impact Hazard Mitigation Work at Los Alamos National Laboratory in 2020: Target Property Parameter Studies, Airburst Effects, and Preparation for the DART Mission.

Abstract:
The Planetary Defense team at LANL has completed a variety of work in support of the NASA/NNSA Airburst Modelers’ Working Group (MWG) and the DART Mission Impact Modelers Working Group (IMWG). We use the FLAG (Burton, 1992) and RAGE (Gittings, 2008) hydrocodes and SESAME EOS database (Johnson, 1994) to explore the response of hypothetical PHOs to mitigation attempts and the response of Earth’s atmosphere to impacting bolides. This year we conducted a mitigation sensitivity study over various PHO strength and composition properties in support of the MWG, explored effects on shock propagation from airburst blast wave interaction with various terrain types, and participated in the DART IMWG inversion modeling drill in preparation for data analysis support of the upcoming NASA DART mission. Results from each of these efforts will be presented at the meeting.
