Abstract:
The data base of the recent phase 6 of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6) represents an important tool to address current research questions from the Earth System Modeling Community. Activities funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) were carried out to support German Modeling Groups in the CMIP6 data production and publication phase. As part of the activities, tools and services have been developed, deployed and maintained by the DKRZ, which together form a reliable data infrastructure.

The post-processing support consists of two tools facilitating diagnostic calculations and data standardization. User’s configuration input is reduced to a minimum while providing them with scripts that exploit all facilities of high performance computing. Before publication, quality checks of the submitted data are performed to ensure that the data is CMIP6 compliant. An ESGF data node has been set up that allows external users to replicate, download and evaluate the data of the local CMIP6 data pool.

The developments made in CMIP6 are highly modular and also applicable for other projects such as the COordinated Regional Downscaling EXperiment (CORDEX). An ongoing activity is the long term archival of the data for a sustainable data usage.
