Abstract:
The Association of Polar Early Career Scientists (APECS) APECS introduced a Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Project Group in 2018 with the aim to ensure that one’s identity is not a barrier to success in polar science. The group’s specific goals were to 1) Facilitate international and interdisciplinary dialogue around diversity, inclusion, and equity in the polar science community, 2) Provide resources for APECS members facing identity-related challenges, as well as bystanders, allies, and leaders in our communities, and 3) Ensure that the values of diversity, inclusion, and equity remain embedded in APECS and related communities now and in the future. Since the conception of the group, members of the APECS International Council have worked towards these goals by hosting webinars addressing bias in professional relationships, working with Indigenous communities, and progress on inclusive policies for polar agencies. Other activities include building a virtual DEI resource repository on the APECS website, creating a Code of Conduct template for use in polar field research, and facilitating a network of mentors for APECS members. As APECS continues to grow as an organization, the DEI project group remains integral to its mission.
