Abstract:
The imaging instruments on the geostationary GOES and Himawari platforms have high horizontal spatial resolution but coarse vertical information about tropospheric gases and temperatures. An approach for fusing a high spatial resolution imager (such as ABI and AHI) and a high information content sounder or trace gas monitor (e.g., CrIS, TROPOMI) offers the opportunity to construct retrieval products (e.g. trace gas concentrations of CO, SO2, NH3) via product fusion at high spatial and temporal resolution. The first set of examples show estimates of the changes in volcanic SO2 plumes over time; the TROPOMI SO2 measurements are paired with ABI infrared measurements over a rather mild eruption of Mexico’s Popocatépetl volcano on 18 March 2019 and also with AHI data over a stronger eruption in Krakatoa, Indonesia on 23 December 2018; both demonstrate spatial and temporal fusion. The second set of examples show CO emission and transport in China detailed in the fusion of AHI and TROPOMI data over a highly developed transportation and manufacturing center (e.g., iron and steel) in the Hebei Province, plus an area dominated by agriculture and forestry industry in the Jilin Province.
