GES DISC Geographic Information System (GIS) Service and Path Forward

Abstract:
NASA’s Goddard Earth Sciences Data and Information Services Center (GES DISC) archives multidisciplinary Earth Observation (EO) geospatial data to study atmospheric composition, weather and climate variability, and water and energy cycles to advance earth science studies. However, due to high spatiotemporal resolution and the complex archiving formats of EO data, users, who in particular rely on off-the-shelf Geospatial Information System (GIS) software, have to invest a lot of energy and resources to properly exploit such data. To accommodate these users’ needs, the GES DISC is in the process of implementing an ArcGIS image service as one of its User Services. This service will allow users to access spatiotemporal datasets in analysis-ready form, thus eliminating the entire download and pre-processing steps. We will demonstrate this service using one of the Global PrePrecipitation Measurement (GPM) representative datasets called Integrated Multi-satellitE Retrievals for GPM (IMERG). Preliminary work in this area has revealed the necessity for good performance of the image service, regardless of the spatiotemporal resolution of the dataset, which requires a robust and well managed system architecture. In addition to opening up this service to the public, the GES DISC has also developed web applications and story maps based on significant historical events, such as cyclone Amphan and hurricane Dorian, hosted through ArcGIS Online. Finally, our new image service, along with the web application and story maps, should be able to guide GIS users to analyze the GES DISC’s data right at their fingertips.
