Abstract:
The air pollution in the Tibet Plateau has received great attention, especially for the light-absorbing carbonaceous aerosol and greenhouse gas pollutants which could influence the rate of glacier melting rate and lead to some adverse impacts on cryosphere. Although the emission intensity in Tibet is generally lower than urban inland areas, it has been reported that there is high level of carbonaceous aerosol in South Asia which could influence the Tibet Plateau through regional transport. It is essential to investigate sources and transport of carbonaceous aerosol in the Tibet Plateau considering its important climate effect. In this study, high time resolution continuous measurement (1 hour) of black carbon (BC) by the 7-wavelength Aethalometer (AE-33) and organic carbon (OC) and elemental carbon (EC) by the Sunset OC/EC semi-continuous analyzer were conducted for one year in 2019, along with other chemical components including fine particle (PM1, PM2.5 and PM10), multiple gaseous pollutants (SO2, NOx, CO, and O3), and meteorological parameters (temperature, wind speed and direction, and relative humidity). The aim of our study is to investigate (1) the diurnal and annual variation of carbonaceous aerosol (black carbon and brown carbon) concentration and sources based on the Aethalometer model and correlation analysis with trace gas pollutants of specific sources, (2) the relationship between BC and EC in the Tibet Plateau, and (3) the influence of local emission and regional transport to the sources of carbonaceous aerosol in the Tibet Plateau. In addition, the results from this study will be very helpful for future investigation of radiative forcing of carbonaceous aerosol and its climate impact in the Tibet Plateau.
