Designing the NASA Air Quality Data System of the Future: User Responsiveness and Data Accessibility for the Multi-Angle Imager for Aerosols (MAIA) Project

Abstract:
The NASA Multi-Angle Imager for Aerosols (MAIA) investigation seeks to extend our current understanding of the impact of the amount and composition of outdoor, airborne fine particulate matter on adverse health outcomes. The MAIA satellite instrument, in development at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and planned for launch in mid-to-late 2022, will collect multiangular, multispectral, and polarimetric measurements over a set of globally distributed targets. Retrievals of aerosol properties will be combined with ground-based air quality monitor data and chemical transport modeling to produce 1-km gridded data products of daily-averaged PM10 and PM2.5 mass, and the fractional abundances of sulfate, nitrate, organic carbon, elemental carbon, and dust making up PM2.5 mixtures. Epidemiologists on the MAIA Science Team will use these data to conduct studies on health outcomes in selected target areas; however, the MAIA team recognizes that these data will be of interest to other epidemiologists and environmental health researchers, air quality agencies, environmental justice advocates, aerosol researchers, and others.

MAIA’s PM data, currently planned to be NASA’s first operational PM products, will be freely available through the Atmospheric Science Data Center (ASDC). With the objective of optimizing the MAIA data for various user communities, the MAIA project and the NASA Applied Sciences Program partner on a MAIA Early Adopters Program, which invites the community of potential users to give feedback on the planned products and provides user resources pre-launch to streamline incorporation into workflows. MAIA recently hosted a joint Early Adopters workshop with the NASA Tropospheric Emissions: Monitoring of Pollution (TEMPO) project, and this presentation will describe improvements made to the MAIA data product formats based on feedback received there. The MAIA project is also partnering with ASDC to improve user experience through data visualization and download tools; synergies with the other air quality missions that ASDC supports, including TEMPO; and incorporation into NASA-wide tools such as Worldview and Earthdata Search.
