ENHANCEMENTS IN PLASMA DENSITY OVER THE EIA CREST REGION DURING POST-SUNSET HOURS IN GEOMAGNETICALLY QUIET PERIODS

Abstract:
Over the crest region of equatorial ionization anomaly, F-region plasma density is found to increase for a short duration during post-sunset hours in geomagnetically quiet periods. The reasons for these enhancements are not comprehensively understood. Using campaign based OI 630.0 nm thermospheric airglow intensity variations over Mount Abu (24.6° N, 72.7° E, dip angle 38.0°), systematic GPS-TEC observations over Ahmedabad (23.0° N, 72.6° E, dip angle 35.2°) during 2010-2019, Indian SBAS-TEC (GAGAN, GPS Aided Geo Augmented Navigation) observations over Indian sectors and dip equatorial ionospheric observations, an investigation is carried out to understand the cause for the post-sunset enhancement in plasma density. The investigation reveals that these enhancements are observed during December solstice and equinox in high solar activity periods. The association of these enhancements with low latitude ionospheric processes will be brought out in this work.
