Girls InSpace supporting the UNOOSA Space4Women initiative

Abstract:

On 11 February 2020, on the International Day for Women and Girls in
Science, the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA)
launched the Space4Women project, aiming to promote gender equality
and gender empowerment in the space sector, providing role models in
the space industry to inspire, guide, encourage and support women and
girls in pursuing STEM education and careers in the space sector. As
one of the 35 international members of the 1st #Space4Women mentoring
network and as the leader of the Girls InSpace project, I present here
the UNOOSA project to the AGU community and discuss the outcomes of
the capacity-building related activities developed along the
challenging 2020 year (reaching teachers, students and general public
in Brazil, US and Europe). Girls InSpace is a Space Science youth EPO
initiative that spans a collection of books written to inspire girls
to become future space scientists. This project is aligned with the UN
2030 agenda (focused on the Sustainable Development Goals #4 and #5)
and with the AGU's mission to "promote discovery in Earth and space
science for the benefit of humanity".
