Lessons Learned from the 2020 Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) Virtual Workshop

Abstract:
In August 2020, a virtual workshop and tutorial was convened to provide training on Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS). DAS is an emerging fiber-optic technique in geophysics that captures dynamic strain fields along the length of a common optical fiber. Over 300 people from 50 institutions on 6 continents registered to participate in the 3-day workshop, which included 12 hours of synchronous high-level and in-depth data analysis presentations, Jupyter notebook tutorials, social breakout sessions, and Q&A periods, as well as asynchronous interactions through a Slack Workspace where reading and video materials were discussed. A group of international graduate students and early career researchers working in DAS aided as “Workshop Guides” to answer questions and facilitate discussions at an experience-appropriate level. The workshop, originally intended to be convened in person, was organized by scientists from the National Science Foundation’s Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) Research Coordination Network and IRIS. Here we present the format of the workshop, tutorials, feedback gathered from attendees, and lessons learned.
