Abstract:
We discuss the role of large-scale forcings for Lagrangian Large-Eddy Simulation (LES) of case studies from the EUREC4A and ATOMIC field campaigns. These case studies use a doubly-periodic domain, and therefore need a representation of the tendencies due to larger-scale circulations. In particular, we consider the role of large-scale advection of the thermodynamics fields and subsidence, which depend on both the choice of the Lagrangian trajectory (the wind speed that is considered most representative for the column), and the choice of averaging domain for the large-scale forcings. The simulations are informed by reanalysis upstream, complemented further with aircraft, surface and ship observations from the campaigns.
We consider the development and organisation of the cloud fields in these simulations, and explore to what extent LES can be used to study the different cloud regimes observed during the campaign. The forcings have been produced with a new tool, lagtraj, which aims to make it easier to develop Lagrangian and Eulerian (supersite-type) LES cases using model level data from reanalysis.
