Enabling ecosystem insights by integrating GEDI data with other NASA Earth observation products

Abstract:
The Oak Ridge National Laboratory Distributed Active Archive Center (ORNL DAAC) hosts the GEDI Level 3 data (gridded canopy metrics) and will host the Level 4 data (footprint estimated aboveground biomass and gridded estimated aboveground biomass). The GEDI canopy metrics and aboveground biomass estimates, together with other remote sensing measurements, provide new insights into terrestrial ecosystem at a global scale. To facilitate the access and use of GEDI data together with other NASA Earth observation products, the ORNL DAAC has developed a set of tools for users and applications to access multiple NASA Earth observation products in a consistent and integrated way. These tools, known collectively as the Terrestrial Ecology Subsetting and Visualization Services (TESViS), have unified NASA data products derived from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS), the Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) mission, Daymet daily weather parameters, and now the GEDI mission’s Level 3 data. TESViS provides retrieval of data products that are harmonized across space and time and incorporate complex data quality flags. Furthermore, TESViS allows users to perform data transformation, visualization, aggregation, and analytics through an easy-to-use web platform, making NASA Earth observation data more accessible to the terrestrial ecosystem community. In this presentation, we will discuss the capabilities of TESViS and how the incorporation of GEDI data will contribute to advancements in ecosystem science.
