Creating Valid Scientific Experiences Through A Symbiotic Citizen Science Program: A Climate Observing Network Case Study

Abstract:
Citizen science is rapidly maturing into an accepted protocol for the advancement of scientific inquiry and, more than ever, the public is expressing a desire to engage in the scientific process, especially in responding to the climate crisis. Yet challenges remain. These challenges include designing citizen science programs that actively engage participants with a sense of purpose whilst avoiding participation fatigue and, integrating a bias-minimizing methodology that ensures consistent, robust contributions without overburdening the volunteer participant or organizers. One solution is a symbiotic program in which scientific engagement complements an existing activity the participant already enjoys. Participants in such a program are more likely to continue to participate, and through sustained engagement, take a more active interest in the scientific aspects of their participation. This paper describes the creation of one such program that engages outdoor enthusiasts in making climate observations.
