Abstract:
The Ionospheric Continuous-wave E-region Bistatic Experimental Auroral Radar (ICEBEAR) is a Canadian VHF E-region coherent scatter radar operating in the terrestrial auroral zone. It has a field of view centered on 58°N, 106°W and makes measurements of ionospheric E-region plasma density irregularities. Through the use of a CW phase modulated signal and a bistatic setup ICEBEAR is able to make simultaneous high temporal and spatial resolution (1 s, 1.5 km) measurements over the full field of view. A linear receiving array was utilized to image the scattered ICEBEAR signal by fitting the complex spatial coherence to a Gaussian distribution. By fitting the complex coherence of the scatter to a Gaussian distribution it is possible to determine the azimuth angle of arrival and the azimuth extent of the scatter. This provides a more accurate depiction of the scattering region than by only using the angle of arrival of the center of the scattering region. This presentation will provide details on the mapping process, as well as some examples of potential studies to be performed with the results.
