Temporal Evolution of Near-Slot Precipitation Events During and After Slot-Filling Injections

Abstract:
We investigate the temporal evolution of near-slot precipitation both during and after a slot-filling injection event, down to approximately L=4, that occurred on 15 February 2018. There is a duality between direct precipitation caused by the injection and delayed precipitation from whistler-mode scattering in the slot region. The contrast between the two types of precipitation is more easily recognized using different satellites as the direct precipitation is well observed by POES and not RBSP, whereas the delayed precipitation is clear from RBSP, but not POES. The electron fluxes and estimated total number of precipitating electrons for both of the discussed precipitation methods is presented.
